Introduction

My clients are companies involved, perhaps for the first time, in the development and manufacture of electro-optical systems who need guidance from an experienced, practical-minded expert in the specialised field of optical design. I have worked with companies that are large, medium and small, some with their own in-house opical engineers, but many with no in-house specialist optics expertise at all.

My consultancy projects have ranged from one-day feasibility studies through to detailed optical design and hands-on system development, working from my home office or within multidisciplinary teams on-site at the client's premises. I have designed new optical systems, improved the performance and cost of existing systems, project managed the design, procurement and assembly of complex lenses, modelled and analysed system performance, conducted technology reviews and advised on markets for scanning technologies.

I am a highly-qualified and experienced optical engineer, with extensive project management experience. I studied at Imperial College, London, in one of the world's top optics teaching and research faculties, under the tutelage of such great figures as Walter Welford, Charles Wynne and Michael Kidger. My work experience has encompassed all phases of the product life cycle, from research and product definition through to field service. I have extensive experience of small- and medium-volume production of complex electro-optical systems (up to 1000 units/year), including development of alignment/test fixtures and procedures.

I use Zemax optical design software (the de facto industry standard) for design and analysis of optical systems, and other analysis software for system modelling. I am experienced in both sequential and non-sequential Zemax analysis, including modelling laser and LED systems, lens design optimisation & tolerancing, light collection, illumination and scanning systems.
